In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, we have a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the importance of nurturing kindness and empathy in our children.
Kindness is the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate. Have there been times in your life when you needed some kindness? How did it feel to be on the receiving end of an act of kindness?
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Being empathetic allows one to connect with others on a deeper level, understand the world around them, and relate to one another. Healthier relationships and stronger bonds can be forged as empathetic individuals understand different perspectives, celebrate diversity, and resolve conflicts more effectively.
Introduce children to stories and tales that feature these values and behaviours, then discuss them together. Storybooks and curated children’s TV programmes and videos can be meaningful resources to help start the conversation.
Children learn and form ideas about the world by observing and imitating. When we model the behaviours we want them to demonstrate, they will follow our lead. Saying please and thank you, making eye contact, apologising, and offering help to others in need are some ways we can show kindness in our daily lives. Showing empathy to your children means actively acknowledging each other’s feelings, sharing emotions, and exchanging perspectives without judgement.
Acknowledge positive behaviours of kindness and empathy to encourage and identify these traits in your child. Prompts are also helpful to remind them to show kindness and empathy. Here are some helpful phrases to use in your daily interactions:
To create a better world where future generations may thrive and grow in each other’s strength and unity, it starts with us building a strong foundation. By showing our love for the world and our loved ones, let’s start nurturing a generation of kinder and more empathetic leaders for a better tomorrow.
Thank you so much for having our daughter at your summer camp. She was very excited when she returned and enthusiastically showed and told us everything she did at camp. Many thanks to the whole team for looking after her, the varied and lovely programme and the nice and warm atmosphere at camp.
